Everyone Wants To Be Near You

When the planets decided who got which positions, Mercury would not be denied. Occupying the first position in line came with a steep price: A few envious brothers and sisters.

Bake me, Mercury said.

And Mercury has been baking since, without ever turning around to grin. Good thing, because Jupiter is still sore, and we might end up with a brawl in the solar system.

If everyone wants to be near you, one might begin feeling badly for Pluto. Don't. Pluto is the shiest of the bunch, and prefers hanging in the back of the classroom.

Behold the range of personalities within our planetary family, and within each of us, as children of the stars.

Take me, for example.

Normally, I'm shy and talk with my hands in my pockets at the end of the line. And sometimes I have to let go of a grudge because someone beat me to you by cutting in line.

And once in a while I go right after what I want and will not be denied, like this weekend when I baked next to your celestial body.

On Saturday, children, the sun goddess smeared me.

Hello Ed - you do have a mysterious way with words, very enigmatic writing. As for Hermosa Beach - I have stopped for lunch there (we had a wonderful holiday along PCH about eight years ago). What a great part of the world you chose to move to.

@chelsey, keep in mind i'm a geek, but yeah, that's my favorite line. don't tell anyone, but i was actually giggling about that line after i wrote it. (shhhh)

Sometimes it's just worth the burn, the layer of skin, the inflated internal temperature. It's just worth it. Sometimes...

Every once in a while, getting baked by the sun is completely worth it. This helped me remember a long day on the beach when I was a teenager, holding hands under the sand with a friend...

You bring out the most interesting memories! :)

Hi Ed,
Here from Amy's. I love your attention to the stars and planets and how ambitious of you to blog every day. Good for you. But back to this post....poor Pluto, not even considered a proper planet anymore by peeps in the so-called know. Much here for me to like, but in particular I love,
"like this weekend when I baked next to your celestial body."

Ed Pilolla said...

@wendryn, i love beach scenes. i can get drunk on the sun so easily.
@yvonne, thanks for stopping by. yeah, pluto got demoted. somehow, i doubt it matters to the rock itself. probably happy to make headlines any way. i saved the near-cliche of celestial body for late, thought it worked better a little buried. gracias!

"Bake me, Mercury said."

These four words just slay me.

Does every Commenter here have a crush on you...

...or just 92 or 93 percent of us?

@lori, after the winter, i'm so white under my shirt i'm a hazard to just-awakened eyes on the beach.
@tori, correct, pluto's my boy! and correct, tutoring sessions aren't dates:) haw-haw:)
@rachelsnyder, mercury is a reckless little tough guy, in my mind. big guys like jupiter make a mistake underestimating the motivated little guy. crush on me? more like ya'all have cosmic sympathy for me and i appreciate it immensely:)
