There is a hole in the ceiling of the universe that leads to ancient waters.
There is a crack in the floor that leads to ancient fire.
Within, I hold something ancient, too. It is guarded by illusion no burglar can master.
For I have tried, and I am considered skilled.
We may never know the reason for the water in the sky or the fire in the ground.
All I know is you broke me open.

mysterious and dark.. Interesting write here...It is an awfully small crack in the ceiling...
"You broke me open". I feel this way, as if I have been broken open and everything within me is spilling out. it's not so bad. loved this! :)
There is mystery in the universe...ancient and full of questions that have no answers...the universe of the heart also has questions for which we have no answers...beautiful !
Intriguing. It is those that leave us open, but take nothing from us that often bring more than we'd bargained on.
That's beautiful
I can definitely relate to this : )
amazing..
As always I love your writing.

"For I have tried, and I am considered skilled."
Wonderful line! :-)
I loved this Ed. :-)
Captivating!
Intriguing because I am not sure if it is good or bad. I am leaning on good. Really like the title.
very nicely played ed...def has some mysticism to it but then also the playful romantic...very nicely done...
The riddle of illusion vulnerable, not barricaded.
Broke you open! Nice words
Even though a lot of the words you use here have a distraught feel, it seems a gratifying if not happy piece.
I'm seeing someone trapped between worlds, unable to be set free, and unwilling to leave.
Maybe the burglar was a guest you weren't expecting to crack the code?
Did the thief steal anything good? Or did you dupe them and make them think they found what they were looking for? Mystery deepens, lets hope you never get swallowed up into the fire, but then you'd always be warm..haha
I would love to have someone break me open and steal the thoughts that won't let my ancient memories rest comfortably.
I have to say that this entry has been my favorite so far! Very deep. I love the fire in the ground and water in the sky metaphor.
Beautiful, just beautiful!! xo
Just one word... "woooowww"
Loved it :)
There's our primal imagery again. It undresses me I think. That's why I like it. You are never more vulnerable than standing naked before the light.
i'm melting ed...love the energy in this...broke open between the fire and water..magical
"All I know is you broke me open."
That gave me shivers.
Maybe that is better than knowing any reason at all.
Mmmmmmmmmm . . . true intimacy.
Love,
Lola
The secret is to allow the thief in the night entry and envelop the intruder with love.
That way, nobody loses.
ed,
To be broken open may lead to the discovery of your guarded ancient something.
This is beautiful.
Namaste..........cj

This is great, Ed :)
The primordial power of the world around us and hidden within us. Loved the magic of your words.

your words paint a striking imagery here,
up and down,
water and fire.
superb entry.

I totally melted when I read the last two lines.
excellent job like a thief in the middle of the night

That's a powerful love poem employing the contradictions of the universe and pulling them together in the final line. Bravo!
This totally nails it--with economy, and a lyric beauty seldom found in simple straightforward sentences. esp like the contradiction in the middle. Had a lot of thieves pass through in my time--what they can't sneak out, the smash in for, and that violation is hard to repair.
not your mother's love poem, for sure! powerful stuff wrapped into these few, gravity-challenging verses.
Very nice!!! (and I love the photo/image too, very powerful). Love your phrasings, especially by the time you get to that last line here. :)
Ed...once again I must say this is fantastic. Could be worse things I'm repeating! Loved the imagery, the swirl of words...awesome.
I see the ancient thing you hold as your heart, and you have locked it away tighter than a drum. And somehow, this talented thief managed to break in and steal it against all odds... But that's just me Ed, I'm a hopeless romantic...... Either way a truly worthy piece and a joy to read......
Amazingly we are prepared for the worst without really expecting the horrors to happen. You are prepared! Excellent thoughts!
Hank
Nice ending: "All I know is you broke me open. Thief in the night."
sitting here in the splitting openness of this poem...
feeling the exposure of heart.
you dig deep. you really do.
Broken open lets more of life in.
This way the fire can warm us and the water quench our burning thirst.
